How to play Gin Rummy: Tips And Tricks
Gin Rummy is one of the most popular of the Rummy games. So if you want to learn the game or play Gin Rummy effectively, you need to master few things. Let us see how Gin Rummy is basically played. Start with the following steps to play Gin Rummy:
First of all you can deal 10 cards each to your opponent and yourself. And the remaining cards should be kept in a stack. Then start organizing your cards in the form of melds. As you must be knowing a meld is a set of 3 to 4 cards of the same value or sequential cards for example (three, four, five of spade) etc.
Then you have to take turn along with your opponent or the other player and pick up cards from the top of the deck or from the discarded set. Points are awarded after each hand when someone knocks or says ‘Gin’. Remember that if it is the first draw of the game, you can only pick a card from the deck. The drawn card is tried to integrate into the meld that is being built.
The cards which you consider won’t become a part of a meld, can be discarded into the discarded pile. As said above, the game ends when a player knocks and knocking can be done at any stage of the game. Knocking can be done only when the total value of the unmatched cards doesn’t exceed 10 points.
After knocking, one card is discarded and the remaining cards are arranged in the sets of melds and unmatched cards. These unmatched cards are called as “Deadwood”. Always keep in mind that a player cannot be forced to knock even if he is able to. He can instead carry on playing and earn a better score.
After that you should add up your total deadwood and separate the deadwood of your opponent from his melds. You can then remove cards from your opponent’s deadwood that can be easily integrated into your melds. Then just add up the opponent’s total value of the deadwood and subtract your deadwood from that of your opponent now. The difference obtained is the score of this hand. The game ends when a player reaches 100 points.
This is the way we play Gin Rummy. After some practice you can master all the skills needed to win in Gin Rummy easily.
